Islam Makhachev's coach has stated that moving up to fight for the middleweight (185lbs) title would not pose a problem for the current lightweight (155lbs) champion.
Makhachev has expressed an interest in achieving double-champion status for some time. Having successfully defended his title against the featherweight (145lbs) champion on two occasions, he is now contemplating a challenge at a significantly higher weight class. Makhachev is widely regarded as a large lightweight, as photos often show him appearing comparable in size to the welterweight (170lbs) champion, Belal Muhammad.
His interest in moving up two weight classes is partly inspired by Muhammad, who is both a friend and a training partner. The idea of taking on such a challenge highlights Makhachev’s ambition and confidence in his abilities.
As the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world, Makhachev’s skill level raises the question: would the size difference at middleweight be too great? If Makhachev were to face the winner of Dricus Du Plessis versus Sean Strickland, his superior skill set suggests he could dominate either opponent. However, a potential match-up against Khamzat Chimaev, should Chimaev win the middleweight title, presents a far more challenging prospect. Given Chimaev’s size, strength, and wrestling prowess, such a fight might tilt against Makhachev.
While Makhachev’s skills could theoretically enable him to capture the middleweight belt, the significant differences in size and strength might ultimately prove insurmountable. This kind of move, jumping up two weight classes, is unprecedented in MMA and would certainly test the limits of even the most talented fighter.
