Joshua Van has the talent and potential to become the UFC flyweight champion one day.
Van currently holds a record of five wins and one loss in his UFC career and is ranked 15th in the flyweight division. In his most recent fight, he faced the then 14th-ranked Cody Durden and secured a dominant unanimous decision victory.
The 23-year-old’s boxing, particularly his impressive body combinations, makes his fights exciting to watch. His fighting style is reminiscent of Anderson Silva, especially in the way he approaches the opening round of his bouts. Van often sacrifices the first round, typically taking a 10-9 loss on the scorecards, as he prioritises studying his opponent’s speed, range, and style. This tactical approach allows him to capitalise on these observations in the final two rounds.
A prime example of Van’s strategy was showcased in his knockout victory over Filipe Bunes. Despite losing the first round on all judges' scorecards, Van secured a decisive KO at 4:31 of the second round, demonstrating his ability to adjust and strike when the opportunity arises.
Van’s sole loss in the UFC came against Charles Johnson, a highly regarded flyweight prospect in 2024. Johnson’s awkward style disrupted Van’s rhythm and ultimately led to a knockout defeat in the opening minute of the third round.
Looking ahead, Van is scheduled to face Bruno Silva at UFC 313 on 8th March. Silva is coming off a loss to Manel Kape and will be eager to get back to winning ways. However, Van enters the fight with momentum on his side, riding a two-fight winning streak.
The flyweight division has historically lacked young contenders, and the fights in this weight class are often considered less marketable compared to other divisions. However, Van’s rise through the rankings — coupled with his entertaining style and tactical prowess — could inject new excitement into the division.
If Joshua Van continues to develop his skills and refine his strategy, there is little doubt that he has what it takes to compete at the top and potentially become the flyweight champion in the near future.
