This bout will be a defining moment in the careers of both fighters, as they have both delivered some of their worst performances in recent years.

Former title challenger Dominick Reyes has achieved only one victory since his controversial loss to Jon Jones in 2020. His most recent fight, after a two-year hiatus, saw him knock out Dustin Jacoby just two minutes into the first round. Reyes’ losses, however, were not against subpar opposition; they came at the hands of Jon Jones—arguably the greatest of all time—former light-heavyweight champions Jiri Procházka and Jan Błachowicz, as well as Ryan Spann, who has faced some of the best in the sport.

Anthony Smith, another opponent who fell short in a title fight against Jon Jones, had an opportunity to win in that match due to an illegal strike by Jones. In recent bouts, Smith has alternated between wins and losses. His last fight was against Roman Dolidze, where he suffered a unanimous decision defeat.

Reyes enters this matchup as the betting favourite at –370, largely due to his emphatic victory in his most recent fight. A win here could reignite his bid for the title.

Smith, however, faces an uphill battle. He has struggled against opponents less formidable than Reyes in recent times. Yet, his nickname, "Lionheart," is well-earned, and he cannot be counted out in any matchup.

In conclusion, this fight appears to be Reyes’ to lose. His latest performance suggests he still has the ability to compete at the highest level. On the other hand, Smith, with his recent losses, may find it difficult to overcome Reyes. However, as always in combat sports, surprises cannot be ruled out.
