In just six months, Diego Lopes has gone from an unranked prelim fighter to a top-ranked contender. With a professional record of 26-6, Lopes is 5-1 in the UFC, with his only loss coming by decision on his debut, which he took on just five days' notice. His standout victory to date was against two-time title challenger Brian "T-City" Ortega, whom he took the distance at UFC 306.

Lopes has caught the eye of fans thanks to his fast-paced striking and knockout power, despite being primarily known as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner.

What’s next for Lopes? He recently served as the backup fighter for the scheduled clash between Ilia Topuria and Max Holloway. Lopes has called out both Topuria and former champion Alexander Volkanovski. However, it seems unlikely that either of these bouts will materialise, as Topuria and Volkanovski are expected to face off against each other in the near future. Instead, Lopes could next face a major name, such as Yair Rodríguez, to further enhance his resume. A rematch against No. 5-ranked Movsar Evloev could also be on the cards, allowing Lopes the opportunity to avenge his earlier loss.

In summary, Lopes is undoubtedly a top contender and could well capture the featherweight title at some point in his career. However, before making his title bid, it is likely he will need to secure one more significant victory, potentially against a high-ranking opponent, to solidify his place as a legitimate championship contender.
